pumpkin of the day: pumpkin doughnuts!
I make a lot of stuff with pumpkin. It is just so delicious and fall-y; I can’t help it. And i know if I make pumpkin goodies, I won’t have to beg people to eat them. Pumpkin goodies like… these doughnuts. [[MORE]] I had to buy a doughnut tin for this recipe, but sometimes “fancy” kitchen “things” are necessary. I don’t like frying things,...
My good friend Jennifer came to visit me in Athens a couple of weeks ago. Her birthday was the weekend before, and because I’m always looking for an excuse to bake, I decided to make her some cupcakes. I asked her boyfriend what her favorite kind was; red velvet was the reply, but she was also in a caramel mood right now. So of course, I chose the more complicated, three-recipe process....

Happy Gluten Free!
My good friend Dory is 20 now! She’s also gluten-free. Birthdays and Gluten free don’t combine well.. unless you bake a Harvest Cake, from Roost (recipe on her blog). This cake is grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, processed sugar-free! And it still tastes delicious!! Trust me. [[MORE]] It has lots of almond flour, which of course makes it gluten free. Lots of zucchini,...
Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
Somedays you just wake up knowng the day is going to be miserable. Sometimes you make silly mistakes. Like me. Sometimes you might even get on the wrong bus. It was kinda cold, and not sunny and beautiful. And I got on the wrong bus. There, I said it. I was waiting at the bus stop at the Arch, texting someone most likely, and the bus pulled up. Family Housing. Good ole Family Housing. The...
i put this song on the Water Day playlist today....
Queen of Pops!
I made popsicles! I made popsicles!! Earlier in the summer, I found a blender in the kitchen, and moved it to where all the counselors keep personal food. Way back before camp even started, I found these popsicle molds and had just been waiting to make some. Finally, one night, I couldn’t wait anymore. Mixed Berry & Kale Pops ::orangejuice ::handful of kale ::frozen...
The Story and The Song
God wrote, “I love you”— he wrote it in the sky, and on the earth, and under the sea. He wrote his message everywhere! Because God created everything in his world to reflect him like a mirror — to show us what he is like, to help us know him, to make our hearts sing. The way a kitten chases her tail. The way red poppies grow wild. The way a dolphin swims. And God put it...
I walked into the dining hall today, and I saw today’s lunch. Thank goodness for greens in a salad, not just iceberg. And fresh strawberries?! Be still my soul. Seeing fresh fruit and fresh veggies on kids’ plates makes me so happy. If I need greens, so do they! Publix Sub for me, with a little extra avocado and homegrown tomato. Praise Him for freshness.
I just climbed in bed, but im so excited about what i just did that i cant sleep yet. Camp food is, well, camp food. Edible and super filling but not so flavorful and not so healthy. I went to the grocery store tonight and bough two bunches of kale, bunch of spinach and two packages each of strawberries and raspberries. And almond milk and honey. I found a blender behind the toaster and I...
skills useful in working at camp
1. simple math. counting kids is beyond necessary. only up to 20 though. you can stop after 20. 2. being able to take a shower in 3 minutes, so you can meet back up with your group to get them changed! 3. setting a table.. for 92 4. folding paper airplanes… and fitted sheets. 5. raising your voice in a fun friendly nice way, as to let the kids know you mean business, but you’re not...
right now: i am: .sitting in bed.. three pillows propped up behind me. .thirsty. .excited about this weekend. i’m lots of things right now. what i want to be doing is a longer, more detailed list. i want to be in the kitchen, making drinks with gin and figuring out which flavors and herbs go well with it. i want to be cooking and having people eat my food. i want to make this:...
home again home again jiggity jig
I’m getting to a point in my life when I’m going to have to start making decisions, decisions that I would rather not have to make on my own. What if God just made them for me and told me specifically what to do? What if He did that? No? OK. Cool. I have a problem: when there are things I should be doing (cleaning my room, washing clothes, packing, unpacking—yes, both at the same time,...
life goals? i don't know.
I’ve been reading this book, An Everlasting Meal. Its incredible. The way she talks about food and cooking, its like it actually matters. When I stop to think about it though, IT DOES MATTER. Cooking well isn’t just something I should do because I don’t want to eat bad food. If I can cook, I should cook, create, bake, concoct, stir, whisk, roast, saute, fry, pan-sear, blend, and...
All ingredients need salt. The noodle or tender spring pea would be narcissistic...– Tamar Adler, An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace got this book today, waited until tonight to read it, and its so good. she has so many thought provoking ideas about food and life.
